Chinese Terracotta Wedding Dolls – Scrolls Inscribed 百年 and 好合

Description

Vintage Chinese Wedding / Newlywed Terracotta Dolls

  • Rare two little figures holding auspicious scrolls inscribed 百年 ‘Hundred years’ and 好合 ‘live in perfect union
  • Terracotta
  • Perfect gift for newlyweds

Interesting two little figures holding auspicious scrolls inscribed 百年 ‘Hundred years’ and 好合 ‘live in perfect union (of couples)’.

These are made with hardened clay, also known as Terracotta or “baked earth”,  a type of earthenware, which is a clay-based unglazed or glazed ceramic, where the fired body is porous.

The body and heads are made of different types of clay. The texture is different as you can see. Both figurines have delicate necklaces that move freely.

A Pair of Chinese Wedding Dolls

I have seen various types of Chinese wedding dolls made with glazed ceramic, plastic, wool and even stoneware. The one on the left is one of my favorite examples;

a pair holding a banner inscribed ‘Happy Marriage’ 喜结良缘

In Chinese wedding customs, these wedding dolls or decorations are very common

However, I have yet to come across clay baked figurines like the ones on sale which makes them extremely. They are in excellent condition, in my own opinion considering how fragile they are.
