This extraordinary 19th-century Nguni/Zulu prestige staff presents one of the most iconic iconographic forms in Southern African courtly art. Carved entirely from a single section of dense indigenous hardwood, the staff features a dual sculptural focus: a curved skeuomorphic arrowhead finial at the apex and a pronounced four-lobed winged / stylized cowhide (izinkomo) relief motif along the upper shaft.

This exact design hierarchy is famously mirrored in classic British Museum staves (Af1949,46.589 and Af1921,0616.28). In 19th-century Zulu royal iconography, cattle were the ultimate measure of wealth, spiritual prestige, and royal favor; incorporating carved hide or wing-like projections directly into a chief’s staff reinforced the ruler’s status as protector and master of vast royal herds.
